It’s about 10:30 at night…the
kids are finally asleep, unable to rest their tired little eyes because of the
discomfort and uneasiness of having a cough and runny noses. The day has been a long one: one child
experiencing what it is like to have a faucet installed in their nasal cavity,
the other sounds like he’s about to cough up a lung. Back and forth, between the two, tending to
their ever-growing needs, the longer they are awake. Feeding them is pointless, one isn’t hungry,
and the other’s throat hurts too much to swallow anything other than
juice. After, what seems like hours and
hours, the two kiddos are finally resting.
And that’s when it hits…
You sit down, thinking
everything is finally going well, when you turn your head, and let out a mild
clearing of the throat. At first you
think it’s nothing…until you realize that you’ve done it five straight
times. Panic is waiting outside the
door, ready to play dodgeball with your emotions. You start to sweat…but this isn’t a scared,
cold sweat…no…it’s a warm sweat, like your body’s temperature is elevated
somehow. Rationale starts to kick in it’s nothing…I’ve been running around…and
its hot today!! You go to the kitchen and grab a glass of whatever’s cool
in the fridge. The cold, refreshing
liquid feels great inside of, as you now realize, your mouth. But then you swallow…
Aarrgg…
The scratchy, irritating
feeling as your drink makes its way down your throat confirms your dreaded
fear. But, denial is such an easy path…it’s been so hot! My mouth must have been dry…I’m just
dehydrated…You shrug off the latest conformation and sit down on the couch,
preparing yourself for a nice Netflix marathon…
The next thing you know…you are
being poked by your youngest...its 8:30 in the morning…You elevate yourself
enough to realize that “up” has now become “down”, and you can feel the world
turning…your youngest is now completely devoid of any ailments; soon you will
realize that your oldest is as well…the symptoms of the discomfort has migrated
from two innocent children to the safe haven that is your bloodstream…
This was my Monday…
